Elizabeth and Copper - Japan

Client Spotlight: Real Results, Real Stories

Copper and I have been on quite the journey over the past three years. I refused to settle for a life of stress, fear, and pure management and I never stopped believing things could get better.Copper was adopted during his peak fear period, nervy, under-socialised, and horribly reactive from day one. I was a first-time dog owner in way over my head. Despite reading books, attending seminars, and working with six different trainers (including a board & train), his reactivity worsened. We faced off-lead attacks, developed a bite history, misused tools, and saw fleeting progress followed by setbacks. I knew more was possible, but we kept falling short.

Then I found Yorkshire Canine Academy.I’d moved across the globe and couldn’t find in-person help, so I turned to YCA’s online program, and I’m so glad I did. The structure is clear, flexible, and tailored to both dog and owner. Even with the time zone difference, I felt fully supported, heard, and guided every step of the way. The trainers’ investment in us made all the difference.

Today, Copper is unrecognisable, playful, trusting, resilient, and able to make great choices on his own. When he’s unsure, he looks to me.If you’re on the fence, take it from someone who’s been through it all, I only wish we’d found YCA sooner. If you’re ready to put in the work and want more for your life with your dog, you’ve just found your place.

Owning a Reactive Dog Was One of The Most Stressful Times of My life

Despite my efforts, Ranger’s behaviour worsened. I realised the issue wasn’t my effort; it was that I was using the wrong methods for him.

I ditched the treats and took a more structured approach, and within weeks, progress was visible. But even then, I wasn’t happy. I was micromanaging his every move.

I soon realised I was training too much. I wanted Ranger to enjoy life, not just obey commands.

After more learning, I discovered 20% of my efforts were driving 80% of the results.

By simplifying my approach, Ranger became more obedient, confident, and happier. Our walks became effortless, and stress disappeared.

I turned this approach into a step-by-step system that helped other dog owners, and the results were life-changing.

But don’t just take my word for it, before I show you exactly how to do it yourself, check out what other owners have achieved using this same approach...

Rico
Rico is our fourth GSD. We rescued him at nine months old, just four months ago, and he’s already the best dog I’ve ever had. I thought I knew training after my last GSD, but it was a challenge. What I was doing didn’t work. After years of trying different trainers, books, and YouTube, I found Jacob, Kirky, and YCA. Their approach balances play, discipline, and love, honoring the dog’s true nature. The dogs get it, are happy, and understand what’s expected of them. I signed up for Focus in Four and was hooked—it worked. So well, in fact, that I joined Training With Instinct. Now, I don’t think YCA will ever get rid of us! Rico loves it, shines, and honestly, it’s fun. He looks forward to training, and it makes sense.

Nelly
Before I started the training with YCA, my walks with Nelly were very anxiety inducing because Nelly has always had a very VERY high prey drive. Every squirrel, cat, rabbit or deer that we would see would lead to an almost explosive reaction from Nelly with lunging, a lot of barking and leash pulling. I went through a lot of different training methods, none of which worked and pretty much had given up that we would ever manage this behavior. I was always very sceptical that any dog trainer could actually help me manage this behavior. This program has definitely been successful in doing this. I would highly recommend this training program!

Frank
We started the training with instinct program for our 9 year old boxer dog, Frank, and within just a few short weeks we saw a massive difference. I was sceptical at the start as we have worked with previous trainers who had basically told us we had to spend our walks avoiding all triggers, which included, dogs of all shapes and sizes and people. As you can imagine that was extremely hard, starting our day as early as 4am to walk Frank! Fast forward to now and we’re able to not only walk Frank calmly past other dogs on lead but we’re also able to take him to the seaside and enjoy watching him off lead having fun and enjoying the rest of his days without being anxious. Thank you Yorkshire canine academy!

Barnaby
We can’t thank Elisha, Kirky, and the Yorkshire Canine Academy enough for the incredible support and training they’ve provided for our Labrador, Barnaby. After being attacked multiple times while on lead, Barnaby developed severe fear reactivity, which quickly turned into aggression. From the very start, they provided expert guidance, patience, and unwavering support. The transformation has been incredible. We couldn’t be happier with the results and wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone in need of expert dog training.

Filo
The training with instinct program was very easy to follow through and we started to see improvements at very early stages. I very much liked the daily schedule , it helped us to set a routine, and the little exercises helped to work Filo’s brain also allowed us more free time. Filo can now be my company on my runs and he can just spaniel around freely. It is very difficult to meet a dog’s exercise needs if they have to be kept on a lead constantly, -especially with high energy breeds.

Bentley
I’ve been following the Training with Instinct course for about 5 weeks now with my Doberman, Bentley. The course has been really easy to follow with loads of useful videos and case studies to watch. I really like that it is about building up gradually; the daily and weekly schedules help keep you focussed and on track with making progress. When I started Bentley was reactive to dogs and occasionally people. Now he’s walking off lead and hasn’t reacted to another dog since starting the course. The main benefit is that I can see that he is so much more relaxed which makes me more relaxed and our walks much more enjoyable.

What our customers say

Most importantly: If you’re unsure about the YCA - don’t be. It will change your life.

When we adopted Goose, our little rescue, we weren’t prepared for the level of reactivity he had. Despite our dedication and regular obedience training, we couldn’t get within 50 metres of another dog without a full-on reaction - barking, lunging, no focus, and no way to reach him. We were constantly avoiding certain streets, trails, or parks, and Goose was always on leash. We felt discouraged and quietly wondered if we’d taken on more than we could handle.

His reactivity wasn’t aggressive - it was social reactivity. He was overly friendly and didn’t know how to regulate his excitement around other dogs. But that didn’t make it any easier to manage, and it still kept him - and us - from enjoying the life we wanted together. Then we found the Yorkshire Canine Academy. It started with their YouTube videos - for the first time, we understood that Goose’s reactivity wasn’t just an obedience issue. It was about how he felt around his triggers.. and until we addressed that, nothing would truly change.Since joining the TWI Program, everything has. With the support of Ian Kirk, Elisha King, and the entire YCA team, Goose has transformed - and so have we. We now enjoy fully off-leash hikes, confidently pass other dogs on trails, and live a life of freedom together. Goose has perfect recall, a solid heel, and clear understanding of helpful commands that keep us both safe and connected. We trust him - and he trusts us.And best of all - YCA helped us achieve all of this without changing who Goose is. His friendliness and love for other dogs are still part of him, but now he has the structure, confidence, and understanding to navigate the world calmly and respectfully. What makes YCA so special is that they didn’t just help us “control” Goose - they helped us learn who he was at heart. They showed us how to understand his needs, his temperament, and what fills his cup. This wasn’t about creating a dog who’s obedient because he’s scared to disobey - this was about building a confident, fulfilled dog who wants to listen, because he feels safe, understood, and free.Goose is now the happiest, most balanced version of himself: curious, calm, goofy, and fully present with us. The bond we share today is because YCA taught us not just how to lead, but how to connect. And the course isn’t just for your dog - it’s personal training for you. It teaches you how to be the kind of leader and trainer your dog truly needs. The skills, mindset, and theory you learn don’t just improve your dog’s life - they help you grow into the best version of yourself for your dog.The program itself is brilliantly structured with step-by-step video lessons for every single training point. Jacob Morgan’s instruction in the videos is in a league of its own - he doesn’t just show what to do, he breaks down the why behind it, the timing, the mindset, and how it all fits together. His clear, detailed explanations paired with real-life examples make everything click - whether you’re brand new to training or feel like you’ve tried everything. And through every group call and 1-on-1 session, Ian and Elisha were patient, thoughtful, and fully invested in our success. They never rushed an answer. They gave us their time, their guidance, and their belief - even when we weren’t sure of ourselves.YCA didn’t just help us train our dog - they gave us back our joy, our freedom, and a bond with Goose we didn’t know was possible. If you’re struggling with reactivity or just want more from life with your dog, YCA will change everything.Big thanks to the YCA.

In June last year we (my daughter) acquired a 16 week old  Malinois lurcher, Reno.  To start everything was fine, sailed through puppy classes, absolutely adorable and happy go lucky.  After perhaps six months Reno turned into a velociraptor, reactive to almost anything, lunging at and chasing everything, we couldn't let him off the lead.  Training leads no chance, he would charge to end of the lead and either pull you over or garrotte himself, we feared that he would injure himself or one of us, not to mention other animals, so slip collars were also out of the question at this stage. We searched the internet for help, eventually settling on the YCA who offered their “TrainingWithInstinct” package, which promised the following, or your money back:• Loose Lead walking• Recall• Reduced reactivityBy signing up we had instant access to the trainers via WhatsApp and could dial into any of the telephone conferences with the trainers; not only that, we also have access to the trainers at their training school in Yorkshire. Results were almost instantly, within days we were managing Reno's food motivation, which in turn led us to being able to recall Reno, within 3 months we were able to place Reno in a sit/down position and recall him from +400m away.  At month four we had a disaster, we nearly lost Reno, to an infection that required major surgery, this put the training back by approximately 3 months.  Once given the all-clear by the vet, we were back training.  Reno now takes it all in his stride and is now never on a lead (unless we are doing loose lead training).  He is joyous when outside and my family are now confident walking him.In summary, Reno has changed our life, he gets two walks a day, each last for an hour, each walk has three elements: Reno doing dog stuff; Reno doing mental work; Reno and I playing. I'm also healthier, I enjoy the solitude of the mornings with my dog, foxes, deer and all the other early morning wildlife; in the evenings other walkers admire Reno's excellent behaviour.  All of this was made possible by YCA.Reno is a changed dog, the YCA taught ME how to interact with our highly energetic dog.  I'm a changed person thanks to the YCA, so much so, that I am seriously considering not retiring, but becoming a dog trainer myself.  Finally, I was walking Reno last week, a lady came over to me asking if I’m a dog trainer, how about that for a success story.  Give them a call, I’m sure you won’t regret it.

Rico is our fourth German Shepherd. We rescued him at nine months old. That was just over four months ago, and already, he's the best dog I ever imagined having. I thought I knew plenty about dog training after my last GSD, but figured I'd try something different with Rico, because really, it was a challenge with my last dog. What I was doing did not work. After watching all kinds of dog trainers, over many years, following advice in person, in books and on YouTube, I was drawn to Jacob and Kirky and the crew at YCA because I liked what I saw. Their approach is different than any I've worked with or seen over the years - it's a healthy relationship with their dogs balancing play, discipline and love for their dogs, honoring the true nature of the dogs. The dogs get it, are happy, and understand what's expected of them in a language that's clear to them. I signed Rico up for the "Focus in Four" online and was hooked. It worked. So well, in fact, that I signed on board for the Training With Instinct. Now I don't think the folks at YCA will ever get rid of us. I love their method, it works, and Rico loves it and shines. Quite honestly, it's fun. He looks forward to training time, and gets it. For me, it makes sense. Sometimes, the videos are downright funny, and really, doesn't that help lighten up when we can get so overwhelmed with dog training and take it so seriously? This approach is on one hand a breath of fresh air, and on the other, an awesome bootcamp that we actually enjoy being in. I can't believe what an amazing dog I have after just a few months. We live on a ranch and rarely get to town, so I'm slow to progress with the distraction elements of this training like meeting other dogs and being in other locations, but we're getting there with the solid foundation. I thought I was nuts at first paying what felt like so much, but time has shown me it's worth it and more. Looking forward to continuing, and learning more. I'll share more when I complete the TWI program, but already I can recommend it, and I have to several people who look at me and Rico and have been impressed. Thanks so much to everyone at YCA for making this program available for us so far away.

Yorkshire Canine Academy has been amazing in helping me train my Border Collie, Hunter, through their Training with Instinct course. From day one, the support was fantastic. They didn’t just train Hunter—they taught me how to handle him with confidence. The focus on obedience gave us a solid foundation, and their approach to reactivity has made a huge difference in how Hunter handles triggers. They also helped me understand how to properly fulfil his mental and physical needs, which has been key to his overall balance and happiness. Plus, learning how to use motivation effectively made training both successful and fun. This course truly transformed our relationship, and I’m so grateful for everything Yorkshire Canine Academy has taught us.

Best investment you can make for you and your dog.I enrolled in the Training with Instinct programme with my newly adopted Doberman already showing early signs of behavioural issues and reactivity towards runners, bikers, kids etc. I was struggling to establish the kind of relationship where he would respect, focus on and listen to me and with him being a big, strong dog I needed to be able to handle him with confidence.Between the WhatsApp group set up just for us and trainers and almost daily check in calls with others in the programme the support has been the key to our success. These guys really do give personalised advice and truly listen and help you problem solve. Listening to Kirky and the team helps understand the reasons behind the „issues” rather than treating the symptoms.Within less than two months from his adoption Ronnie has reliable recall, can coexist with kids, doesn’t try to chase bikes or runners. I have confidence in him and he trusts me to handle any situation and advocate for him if necessary meaning no reactivity. There are areas that are still work in progress but with the knowledge I’ve gained in this process I’m confident I can handle it from here.Thank you YCA.

I recommend the YCA to everyone I know. Atlas is almost 2 and struggles with dog reactivity. Before we started trainingwith the YCA his recall sucked, I used to dread walks and I constantly felt like I was failing to give him the life he deserved. Atlas initially did 3 days training at the YCA & we went for 2 in person 1-1s where he leant the basics of loose lead walking, and we left with a clear plan &training exercises to do & had lots of WhatsApp support. We then did their online trainingwithinstinct programme and the e-collar course. I used to be very uneducated about e-collars and would never have even considered using one previously. However, after learning about how it is introduced & used in the course, I can honestly say that any misconceptions I had about them only being used in a “cruel” way went out the window. The course has been life changing for us and Atlas has been off lead on walks around the countryside, past dogs, cows, sheep and people for the first time this week since he was 5/6 months old. Seeing him run around off lead, genuinely loving life, is the most amazing thing. I can also now fully enjoy our walks as I’m not constantly stressing about not having control over him and him not having reliable recall. In my opinion, trainingwith the YCA is the best decision I ever made for me & Atlas ❤️ Thank you!

We've just finished YCA's TrainingWithInstinct programme and they've managed to help us with every issue we set out to address with Ted, our two year-old Malinois cross. We really cannot recommend them highly enough. The training documentation is fantastic and the accompanying video tutorials are easy to follow, the 1:1 sessions we had were transformative, and we were supported brilliantly throughout via WhatsApp and group calls. Ted arrived with us from Dog's Trust as a super-reactive whirlwind; beautiful temperament but wanting to chase everything that moved. As a result he pulled ridiculously on the lead, was far too boisterous around other dogs and had no self-control around footballs, basketballs etc...not a good look in the local park. He now walks brilliantly on a loose lead, ignoring other dogs with bad manners (we now notice how many of them there are!); he recalls superbly and is just way calmer in general thanks to the boundaries and thresholds YCA have helped us put in place. One particular moment to call out happened about 6 weeks in. We were really struggling with a particular step in the course and feeling quite dejected, which we conveyed via our private WhatsApp group: Jacob, Kirky and Elisha jumped straight on it with a plan, but more importantly, encouragement. A week later we were in a 1:1 with Kirky, and turning a corner. We were told right at the start to expect challenges and then a collective lightbulb moment when we and Ted would click, as all the foundations began working together, and that's exactly what happened. We're looking forward to staying in touch as 'graduates', as more than anything else YCA are just good people to hang around and natter about dogs with. Thanks everyone.

Owen Coombes

We recently rescued a 2 year old working whippet with issues, mainly reactivity to other dogs and displaying boisterous behaviour, sometimes bordering on aggressive. Amazing, worth every penny. Great trainers that care about your dog and you achieving the goals you set out to achieve. For me, that was calm while walking past other dogs and off leash freedom. We can now take Leo everywhere and anywhere from ferries and cafés to open moors and woodland. When we first came to YCA, Leo would get overly excited and try to run to up dogs or jump at people. After doing the trainingwithinstinct course, we can mountain bike together and enjoy a pint in busy pubs with plenty of dogs. Just talk to the team and do it. You won't regret it.On lead, he would swing round, jump and basically pull our arms out of the sockets trying to jump on a passing dog. It was incredibly stressful and we dreaded taking him out. At home, he was good as gold and we knew he hadn't been socialised with other dogs.We decided to have an assessment at YCA and saw one of the trainers there- Elisha. She put a 5 week 1:1 plan together for us and we made a start. Now, we're not saying it was easy, it was hard at first, getting to grips with our homework, and learning what we were doing wrong, and the time we had to put into it all, but we had invested in our dog and deep down, we knew he could be better. He was a loving dog in the home and we had developed a close bond with him.Elisha told us in 3 weeks, he'd be off the lead. We said to ourselves no way is that going to happen. Guess what? She was spot on and we are now walking him off lead in the woods, letting him chase squirrels and run for his ball and we have confidence of having full control of his recall. We're enjoying walks with him now and continuing his training at the same time.We can't praise Elisha enough for all her help.We are so glad we decided to go ahead at YCA.

Julie Carpenter

When Alby’s resource guarding worsened, and he suddenly became reactive to touch, we felt lost—we didn’t know what we had done wrong. The YCA were incredibly supportive and understanding, but most importantly, they gave us hope that we could help Alby live a happier, stress-free life. The 'TrainingwithInstinct' program has been invaluable. The personalised feedback ensures we are on the right track, and we have never felt rushed with our progress. Knowing the YCA will continue working with us until our training goals are fulfilled has been truly reassuring. We have already started to see improvements in Alby's behaviour, but more importantly we now have the tools to support him. We are excited to continue our journey on this programme!

Training with Instinct FAQs

I’ve already spent a fortune on dog trainers. Why should this be any different?

Most of our clients come to us after wasting money on outdated methods or trainers who couldn’t deliver results. The difference? We focus on practical, real-world training that actually works, and we guarantee it. If you don’t see significant improvement, we refund you. No other trainer offers that level of confidence.

I have a difficult breed. Can this work for my dog?

We’ve successfully trained everything from stubborn terriers to high-drive working breeds. The idea that certain breeds are ‘untrainable’ is a myth, one we’ve disproven time and time again. The principles we teach work across the board, no matter the breed or background.

Remote training won’t work for my dog. I need in-person help.

Most behaviour issues happen at home, not in a training centre. That’s why remote coaching is actually more effective, because we help you train in the environment where problems actually occur. Plus, you’ll get personalised guidance, ongoing support, and direct access to us whenever you need help.

I’ve tried everything. Nothing has worked.

We hear this all the time, until clients try our approach. The reality is, most people have only tried a handful of common methods that aren’t tailored to their dog. Our system is different: it’s based on what actually works, not internet trends or outdated theories.

My dog is too bad. I don’t think they can be trained.

No dog is untrainable. We’ve worked with thousands of ‘lost causes’, dogs who were labelled dangerous, reactive, or out of control. The problem isn’t your dog, it’s the approach you’ve been using. That’s what we’ll fix.

I don’t have time for a big training programme.

You don’t need hours a day, just a few minutes of the right training. Our methods fit into your daily routine, so you’ll see results without your entire life revolving around training.

What if I need extra help?

That’s exactly why we offer direct coaching and ongoing support. If you ever get stuck, you’ll have expert trainers on hand to guide you through it.

What if it doesn’t work for me?

If you follow the programme and don’t see significant improvement in your dog’s behaviour within 60 days, we’ll refund you. No risk, no nonsense.

Can’t I just figure this out on my own?

You could, but how much longer do you want to struggle? If you wanted results by now, you’d already have them. Instead of trial and error, this programme gives you a proven roadmap, so you can stop guessing and start seeing real progress.
